Write About an Accident:

It starts with a rather careless mistake.

Having dispatched the vampire called Lokil and left his thralls unconscious and bound, he and Erandur set about investigating the platform in the middle of Dimhollow Cavern, and in the process Vanyel rests his hand on the pedestal in the center.

He doesn’t intend to leave it there for more than a moment, but a moment is all it takes - a blade emerges from the pedestal in the time it takes him to blink, and before he can even think about pulling his hand away he’s been stabbed.

He backs away from the thing and applies a healing spell - he’s already mentally chastising himself for his carelessness, but he’s rather neatly distracted from that by the sight of the floor nearest the pedestal sinking, revealing a sarcophagus beneath.

For a long moment after that, everything is still. But when Vanyel creeps closer to investigate, the lid of the sarcophagus falls away, revealing a woman within, arms folded over her chest and face as peaceful as if she were only sleeping.

And then -before he has time to properly wonder how it is that she looks so recently deceased, when this entire structure is clearly ancient- she falls forward, landing on her hands and knees. From there, she climbs gingerly back to her feet; and once he gets a look at her eyes, all but glowing amber in the dim cavern, the mystery solves itself. Vampire.

“Where’s-” She starts to ask, and her voice is sweeter than expected. (He has to wonder how young she was when she was turned, to sound like that.) “Who sent you here?” Is what she ends up asking them instead.

The Dawnguard would want him to kill her, he knows that; but instead he finds himself drawn into conversation with her, trying (unsuccessfully) to find out who locked her away here, and why, and why she’s carrying an Elder Scroll. What little she does say is worrisome, hinting toward a plot by a particularly powerful and cunning vampire - her father.

In the end, he agrees to escort her to her family home. And perhaps that’s compounding the error, another mistake on top of the first, but it gives him a chance to try and get more information out of her about this plot. After all, the more they know, the better prepared they’ll be to foil it.

And, on a personal level… he can’t help but be intrigued by her. She doesn’t act like any vampire he’s ever encountered, being civil and almost friendly when she isn’t dodging questions.

So they set off, the three of them - and none of them could know then that it was both the first leg of a very long journey and the beginning of a fire-forged friendship.
